Khurshed Batliwala’s video about Technology of Spirituality is not something unique or path breaking but it definitely comes in a package that kindles the sentiments with its astute approach.   It would create a frenzy among the newly globalised, highly suave and increasingly nostalgic Indian.  Both resident and non-resident Indians are starting to lose the vibe of Indianess.  The vibe of superiority enshrined by birth has suffered a major dent and are desperate to show the world that they are not just a bunch of white collared workers.   In their desperation they are giving credence to any gibberish which would not only sound scientific but also help revive their lost pride.

This is where people like Khurshed fill in with their educational qualifications as springboards and their manipulative ideas as paraphernalia for approbation among the ‘educated masses’.  Khurshed and their ilk are savvy enough to gauge the sycophancy of their fellow hindus.  So they mash up their ideas with science, history and copious amounts of hindu fairy tales.  These aren’t mere lies but a constructed notion against the indigenous people to distort their history and their contributions.   In the video Khurshed odiously compares the tribals with the brahmans.  The truth is that the tribals have always been more compassionate and productive than the brahmans or any other caste for that matter.  Even if we were to hypothetically accept whatever he is saying where did it all go without a trace and why do people languish in abject poverty.

Khurshed claims zinc was extracted thousands of years ago before the Europeans stole the idea via the Chinese.  If it was thousands of years old it could have been anyone but the point is if they could extract using their spiritual or yogic abilities why couldn’t they extract pure zinc. The reason being the technology or the knowledge at that stage was limited or to tell the truth no one knew that it was zinc (chemically speaking).  As science and technology progressed and when the actual need/want for zinc was realised pure zinc was extracted, not by any tantric but by a person who intended to do it by real scientific means.

Then he jumps to astronomy/ancient history rambling about varaha avatar, jestha and arundhati stars.  Varaha avatar being referenced to state the fact that the earth is round (in reality it’s spherically flat) is a stupefying statement.  Even if it were true what was the point of discovering or knowing that the earth was round and coming up with a wild story which doesn’t serve any purpose.  When did a boar taking the earth into the ocean become part of history? Those claims about jestha and arundhati are akin to sticking-the-tail game.  Here Khurshed is sticking it with his eyes open as astronomers have already with advent of time and lot of effort established it with scientific methods and empirical evidence.

Then he mentions a sloka about Krishna which is apparently encrypted.  An encryption of the mathematical constant Pi, of all the pressing things in this whole wide world.    Why should that mathematical constant be encrypted and why should anyone care even if it was.  The consistent thing about these are that nothing is straight forward and can be encrypted/decrypted at will.

Soon another Batliwala-alike would come along and say that the iPhone was conceived by Vishvamitra and some dude named Ashasravacharya wrote it in a scroll but the guys at Apple stole it and the ‘educated’ Indian would cheer for that as well.  Welcome to brahmanical philosophy where even the gods are controlled by the mantras then why not claim iPhone to be their invention. The brahmanical mindset of claiming credit to every accomplishment in this world is getting ludicrous by the day.

These are the same people with their metaphysical approach succeeded in creating a hegemonic social order so rigid that it reverberates in every aspect until this day.  This hegemonic order has even taken scientific dimensions and is being questioned in the ever changing socio-political environment.  The need to justify its relevance has risen and it can no way be justified in the current climate as it has become defunct.  So they take the ‘time machine’ and travel back to previous millenniums scouring for anything that can be conjured up with any established fact.

Behind this facade lies the message ‘bring back the good old days’ and the ‘good old days’ that they want to take us back had caste segregation, untouchability, enslavement of women and numerous other social evils as a way of life.  These devious intelligentsias are feeling the heat and are increasingly paranoid of losing their undeserved prominence.  So like always they have started concocting fables and sowing them as facts in young minds.  The brahmanical drivel which for long has controlled the past thereby controlling the present is losing the battle waged to reclaim the past that rightfully belongs to millions of indigenous people of this vast land.

The neo-brahministic class, an offshoot of globalisation is being targeted. The neo-brahmins in their avarice and gullibility are digesting it with no forethought.  These trolls like Batliwala should be resisted from manipulating the people to submit to their wanton ways, the ways which created the despicable caste system discriminating fellow human beings in the most inconceivable manner known to man.

அனைத்து இந்திய லாரி உரிமையாளர்கள் சங்கம், அனைத்து இந்திய அந்த சங்கம் இந்த சங்கம் என்று இருக்கும். அதில் எல்லாம் மாநிலம், மாவட்டம், மாநகரம் என்று ஒவ்வொரு குழு அடங்கும். அது போல தேவர் குழு, செட்டியார் குழு, முதலியார் குழு, நாடார் குழு, பிள்ளை குழு என்று எல்லாம் சேர்ந்து நாம் தமிழர் என்று ஒரு சங்கம் அமைத்து உள்ளது. சரி எதுக்கு இந்த சங்கமுன்னு கேட்டா எல்லாரையும் ஒன்று இன்னைத்த பிறகு எல்லாருக்கும் அறிவுரை கூறி ஜாதி பற்றை அல்லது வெறியை கைவிட செஞ்சுடுவாங்கலாம். ‘இவன்’ என்ற பார்த்திபன் படம் நினைவுக்கு வருது. அதுல மிஸ்டர் பார்த்திபன் என்ன செய்வாருன்னா எல்லா வில்லன்களை கடத்தி பேசியே திறித்திடுவாறு. நல்ல தமாஷா இருக்கும். அதே வித்தையை நம்ம தன்மான சிங்..ச்சி புலி சீமான் செஞ்சினு இருக்காறு. ஏதோ அவவன் தேவை இல்லாம தேவனாகவும், வெட்டியா வன்னியனாகவும், சும்மனாச்சுக்கும் செட்டியாகவும், டைம் பாஸ்சுக்கு தலித் ஆகவும் இருக்கான் ரெண்டு நல்ல வார்த்தை சொல்லி திறுதருதற்கு. இந்த கூத்துக்கு பின்னாடி ஒரு கூம்பல் வாங்க தமிழரே கொள்கை தேவையில்லை, கூட்டம் தான் தேவை, கட்சி தான் தேவை. வீரம் தான் தேவை என்று இயேசு அழைக்கிறார் கும்பல் கூச்சப்படும் அளவிற்கு சகட்டு மேனிக்கு பிரச்சாரம் செய்கிறார்கள். எல்லா ஜாதிக்காரனும் (சுத்ரவாள்) செந்துக்குன்னு தலித் மக்களை வேற வாங்க தமிழரே என்று தீடீர் பாசம் செலுத்துறான்(ராம ஜன்மபூமி நினைவிற்கு வருது). சும்மா வாங்க பிரச்சனைய அப்புறம் பார்த்துப்போம் என்று எத கேட்டாலும் இப்போ ஈழம் தான் ஒரே பிரச்சனைன்னு ஜார்ஜ் புஷ் 9/11 போல அரச்ச மாவையே அரைக்கிறான். ஈழ போர் ஏன் இப்படி ஆச்சின்னு மட்டும் கேட்டோம் காங்கிரஸ், சோனியா, கருணாநிதி, இளங்கோவன், அசின், விவேக் ஒபரோய் என்று எல்லாரையும் இழுத்து ஒரு கலட்சபம் நடத்திடுவாங்க. சரி இப்ப என்ன செய்யலாம் என்றால் அ.தி.மு.க விற்கு வோட்டு , கனிமொழிக்கு சிறை, மோடி போன்ற ஆட்சி என்று தே.மு.தி.க வின் அடிமட்ட தொண்டனுக்கு உள்ள அரசியல் சமூக அறிவை வியக்கும் அளவிற்கு பேசுவார்கள்.

"தமிழகத்தின் பால் தாக்கரே" சீமான்

ஒரு மணிநேரத்திற்கு பிறகு,

“சரிப்பா நான் கெளம்பறேன்…போயிட்டு வரேன்மா. வரேன் அண்ணே”, என விடைப்பெற்றபடி கல்லூரிக்கு புறப்பட்டாள் தமிழரசி.
“சரிம்மா சாக்கிரதையா போயிட்டு வா”, என மகளை வழி அனுப்பிவிட்டு, “பாத்தியாலே…எங்க வம்சத்துக்கு கிடைச்ச மாணிக்கம்லே..சாதிக்காரன் ஒவ்வொருத்தன் வவுறும் பத்திக்கிட்டு எரியும்லே…அவன் அவன் போட்டி போட்டுக்கிட்டு பையங்கள டாக்டர்க்கு படிக்க வக்கிறான் கலெக்டர் ஆக்கணும்னு சொல்றான்… எதுக்குன்னு நினைக்கற…எல்லாம் என் பொண்ணுக்கு கட்டிகொடுக்கலே”, என ஆறுமுகத்திடம் தன் மகளின் பெருமையை பேசி பூரிப்படைந்தான் ரத்தினம்.

வாய்க்கால் அருகே…

“பாலையென வெறுமையாய் இருந்த நிலத்தை
அரை நொடியில் முல்லையென மாற்றிவிட்டாய்;
குறிஞ்சியின் இரு சிகரங்களை மார்பிலும்
நெய்தலை இதழ்களினுள்ளும் சுமந்தபடி
அமைதியாய் நின்ற இந்த மருதநாயகனை சுக்கு நூறாக்கி விட்டாய்”,
என தமிழரசியை கவிதையுடன் வரவேற்றான் கருணாகரன்.
“ஒரு நாள் இல்ல ஒரு நாள்…வாங்கின கவிதைக்கு கொடுக்க வேண்டிய பாக்கி எங்க தம்பின்னு கேட்டு வந்து நிக்கப்போறாங்க, அன்னிக்கி இருக்கு உனக்கு”, என கேலி செய்தாள் தமிழரசி.
“அய்யகோ…கருணா…உன் தமிழ் புலமை மீதே சந்தேகமா? இதைத்தீர்க்க வேண்டுமெனில் ஒன்று ஆழ்கடலில் மூழ்கி எழ வேண்டும் அல்லது மலை உச்சியிலிருந்து குதித்தெழவேண்டும். அனுமதி உண்டா அரசி?”, என தமிழரசியை சீண்டினான் கருணா.
“போதும் நிறுத்து கருணா.. என்ன யோசிச்சிருக்க? உனக்கு தெரிஞ்ச பசங்க கடைசி நேரத்துல காலவாரமாட்டங்களே? வீடு பாத்துட்டியா?”, என சரமாரியாக கேள்விகளை அடுக்கினாள் தமிழரசி.
“நான் இருக்கும் போது பயம் உன்னைவிட்டு ஒரு 100 அடி தூரம் தள்ளி நிக்க வேணாம்? கவலைபடாதமா.. நான் பாத்துக்கறேன். பசங்க ஒரு வீடு சொல்லி வச்சிருக்காங்க. ரெண்டு நாள்ல தகவல் வரும்”, என தமிழரசியை தன் மார்பில் சாய்த்தபடி தட்டிக்கொடுத்தான் கருணா.
“எனக்கு உங்க வீட்ட நினைச்சா தான் கொஞ்சம் பயமா இருக்கு…உங்க அப்பா…என்ன ஒரு 6 அடி இருப்பாரா? அவரும் அவர் மீசையும்…என்ன தேர்ந்தேடுதத்துல அவருக்கு சவர செலவு மிச்சம்…ரெண்டு நாள் எங்க அப்பாருகிட்ட பழகிட்டு வந்தா மாப்பிள்ளையும் நானே நாவிதனும் நானே”, என சிரிப்பினை அடக்கிய படி தமிழரசியை பார்த்தான் கருணா.
“நீ இப்பிடியே என் அப்பாவ வம்புக்கு இழுத்துட்டு இரு. அவரோட பழகினாத்தான் அவர் நல்ல மனசு உனக்கு புரியும். எனக்கு பிடிச்சதெல்லாம் அவருக்கும் பிடிக்கும்”, என தந்தையின் புராணம் பாடத் துவங்கினாள் தமிழ்.
கருணா சிண்டுவதும் தமிழ் சினுங்குவதுமாய் 2 மணி நேரம் கடந்த பின்னரே கமலா என்ற பேதை தனக்காக பேருந்து நிறுத்தத்தில் காத்திருப்பாள் என நினைவுக்கு வந்தது தமிழரசிக்கு.

சில நாட்களுக்கு பிறகு…

“இது…ரொம்ப நாளா இந்த மாடு இங்க காணோமே..உழுதுட்டு இருந்துச்சா?” என ஆறுமுகத்திடம் கேட்டான் ரத்தினம்.
“இல்லையா..நான் இங்க இல்லாதப்ப சண்முகம் சரியா கட்டி வைக்கல போல..அது அவுத்துக்குட்டு ஓடிருச்சு. நானும் தேடாத இடம் பாக்கி இல்ல…இன்னிக்கி குட்டிசுவத்துக்கு பக்கத்துல மேஞ்சுக்கிட்டு இருந்தது…அதுதான் இழுத்துட்டு வந்தேன்”, என்றான் ஆறுமுகம்.
“ஏலே அறிவில்ல…சோறு தான திங்கற, அதுதான் வீட்டுல போடற நல்லத திங்காம ஊர்மேய போச்சுனா…இவன் அத இழுத்துக்கிட்டு வந்தானாம். நாளைக்கு சந்தைல விக்கும் போது ஊருமேஞ்ச மாடுன்னு சொல்லி எவனும் வாங்கமாட்டான். அப்பறம் என் கௌரதை என்னாகுது. பாத்த இடத்திலியே அத வெட்டி போட்டிருந்தா..”, எனக்கூறி முடிப்பதற்குள் கூரையின் நடுவே இருந்த அரிவாள் ரத்தினத்திற்கு தென்பட்டது.
“அத எடுத்துட்டு வாலே… என் கண் முன்னாடியே இந்த சனியன கண்டம் துண்டமா வெட்டுலே…வீட்டுல பொத்தி பொத்தி வளத்தா தலைகணம் புடிச்சு ஊர்மேய போகுதோ! அந்த தலைய சீவிடுலே… தவிடும் புண்ணாக்கும் போட்டா…சுவத்தொட்டியும் ரோட்டுல கடக்கற புல்லும் எனக்கு போதும்னு போன அந்த கால வெட்டுல.. என் வீட்டு சோத்த தின்னுட்டு ஊர்மேய போச்சுன்னு சொன்னா, என் சாதி மருவாதை என்ன ஆகும்.. நாலு பேர் அப்பறம் என்ன எப்படி மதிப்பாங்க”, எனத் தன் சாதி வெறியினை வெளிச்சம் போட்டு காட்டினான் ரத்தினம்.
“என்னங்க..ஐய்யர வரச்சொல்லி இருந்தீகளாம். வந்திருக்காரு”, என குறுக்கிட்டாள் காமாட்சி, கண்களை துடைத்தபடி.
“இதோ வரேன்னு சொல்லு…நீ எதுக்குடீ கண்ண கசக்கிட்டு நிக்கற? எனக்கு மட்டும் என்ன ஆசையா..பெத்த பொண்ணுக்கு காரியம் செய்யனும்னு… நாய சிங்காரிச்சு நடு வீட்ல வச்சாலும் வாலாட்டிகிட்டு பீ தின்னத்தான் போகும். அது அப்ப எனக்கு தெரியாம போச்சு”, என அலுத்துக்கொண்டான் ரத்தினம்.
அரிவாள் காளை மாட்டின் கழுத்தினை பதம்பார்க்க, இரத்தம் ஊற்றெடுக்க, ஓரிரு துளிகள் ரத்தினத்தின் சட்டை மீது தெரித்தது.
அதை கழற்றிவிட்டு, “இத சுத்தம் செஞ்சுடுலே”, என ஆறுமுகத்திடம் கூறிய படி வீட்டினுள் நுழைந்தான்.

“பேசாம கிளம்பு …இப்படி விசேஷங்களுக்கு எல்லாம் போனா தான் …நம்ம வீட்லயும் பொண்ணு இருக்குனு நாலு பேருக்கு தெரியும் ”, என கேவலமான ஒரு விளக்கம் அளித்தாள் விசாலாட்சி .. சந்தேகமே வேண்டாம் நளினியின் தாயே தான் .

“இதெல்லாம் சரியே இல்லே மா …சீவி சிங்காரிச்ச மாட்ட சந்தைலே விலை பேசறா மாதிரி இருக்கு நீ சொல்றது ”, என அலுத்துக் கொண்டாள் நளினி.

“போயிட்டு தான் வாயேன் டி …சும்மா வீட்டுலே TV முன்னாடி உக்கார போறே”, என விசாலாட்சியின் கணவரும் குரல் எழுப்ப …இனி நம் சினுங்கல்கள் வேலைக்கு ஆகாது என முடிவு செய்தாள் நளினி.

“ஏதோ நல்ல reception சாப்பாடு உண்டு…அதுக்காக வேணும்னா போகலாம் ; அம்மாவின் கூச்சலுக்கும் ஆர்ப்பாட்டத்துக்கும் அந்த இன்னிசை மழை எவ்வளவோ பரவாயில்லை”, என வேறு வழி இல்லாமல் தன்னை தேற்றி கொண்டாள் நளினி. .

பன்னீர் மணம் வீச ரோஜா இதழ்களும் , கற்கண்டும் வரவேற்க திருமண மண்டபத்தினுள் நுழைந்தனர் .

விசாலாட்சியை கண்ட உடன் நாலைந்து பேர் ஓடோடி வந்தனர் .

“வருவியான்னு சந்தேகம் இருந்தது ..பரவாயில்லை கரெக்டா வந்துட்டே …இது யாரு நளினி தானே …பாத்து ஒரு 3 வருஷம் இருக்கும் …என்ன பண்றே மா ..”, என ஒரே மூச்சில் பேசி முடித்தாள் ஒரு அம்மையார். அம்மாவின் தோழி என சட்டென புரிந்து கொண்டாள் நளினி.

“நான் …” என விடை அளிக்க வாயை திறந்தாள் நளினி …அதற்குள் விசாலாட்சியும் அவர் தோழிகளும் நகை புடவை பற்றிய உரையாடலில் இறங்கி விட்டனர் . “அதுதான …அம்மாவின் தோழி ஆச்சே … நாம பேசறத எங்க கேக்க போறாங்க ; அமைதியா இருப்பது தான் சரி ”, என தீர்மானித்த படி சமையலறை பக்கம் திரும்பினாள் நளினி.

“ஏன்டி நல்ல வசதியான குடும்பம் தான ….ஏன் இப்படி ஒரு பொண்ண பாத்திருக்காங்க , தொட்டு கண்ணுல மை வச்சுக்கலாம் போல …”, விசாலாட்சியின் தோழிகளில் ஒருத்தி.

“மெதுவா பேசு டி …யாருக்காவது கேட்டுற போகுது …நல்ல வரதட்சனை கொடுத்திருப்பான் பொண்ணோட அப்பன் …அதுதான் இப்படி ஒரு பையன மடக்கி போட்டுட்டாங்க”…இது விசாலாட்சி .

“இந்த பொண்ண பாத்தா ‘கோபுரங்கள் சாய்வதில்லை’ சுஹாசினி மாதிரி இல்லே …?” என ஒருத்தி கேட்க… “சுஹாசினி கொஞ்சம் கலரா இருந்தான்னு நினைக்கறேன் ”, என்று இன்னொருத்தி குரல் எழுப்ப அந்த வட்ட மேசை மாநாட்டில் சிரிப்பொலி அடங்க நிமிடங்கள் 5 ஆகி இருக்கும் .

குளிர் பான பெட்டியின் இதமான காற்று நளினியின் மனப்புழுக்கத்தை இன்னும் தூண்டி விடுவது போல் இருந்தது . “அம்மா …ஏன் இப்படி ”…என பேச ஆரம்பித்த நளினியின் வார்த்தைகள் செவிடன் காதில் ஊதிய சங்காயிற்று.

“கோடி கோடியா பணம் கொடுத்தாலும் இப்படி ஒரு கேவலமான பொண்ண என் பையனுக்கு …மாட்டவே மாட்டேன் ”, என நளினியின் தாய் சூளுரைத்தாள்.

“ஆமாம் கேக்க மறந்துட்டேன் …பையன் ஆஸ்திரேலியால இருக்கானே …அங்க ஏதோ நிற வெறி பிரச்சனை எல்லாம் ரொம்ப அதிகமாகி இருக்காமே …என்ன சொல்றான் ”, என ஒரு நலன் விரும்பி கேள்வி எழுப்பினாள்.

“அவன் இருக்கும் இடத்துல ஒன்னும் பிரச்சனை இல்லியாம் ….நான் கூட திரும்பி வந்துடுன்னு தான் சொல்றேன் …எங்க கேக்கறான் . அவனுக்கு அந்த lifestyle தான் பிடிச்சிருக்காம்.

News எல்லாம் பாக்கும் போது தான் வெளிநாடுகள்ல இருக்கற நிற வெறி பத்தி எல்லாம் தெரிய வருது …அப்படி என்ன வெறுப்போ நம்ம தோல பாத்தா …”, என அலுத்து கொண்டாள் விசாலாட்சி .

ஒரு நிமிடம் நளினி நடப்பது புரியாமல் திடுக்கிட்டு நின்றாள்.

வெட்கம் கலந்த புன்னகையுடன் மேடையில் நின்ற மணப்பெண்ணை பார்த்தாள். சில நிமிடங்களுக்கு முன் அவள் சரமாரியான நிற வெறி தாக்குதலுக்கு உள்ளானதை நினைத்தாள்…கொதித்தாள்…சட்டென எட்டி பார்த்த கண்ணீரை துடைத்துக்கொண்டாள்.

A country like India has never been in dearth of religious gurus. From the usual street corner tantrik or fakir to high profile gurus such as Sai Baba, Amrita, DGS Dinakaran etc, the gurus are many. In fact, the gurus would probably outnumber the different gods of all religions put together. Traditionally, their roles were mostly restricted to performing gimmicks such as vomiting lingams and necklaces, giving out oracles (arul vaaku) and spewing out some Sanskrit mumbo jumbo which no one can make any sense of. People like DGS Dinakaran made their riches by organizing miracle gatherings where ‘acts of god’ were performed. This included things like people suffering from incurable diseases being cured instantly, the physically challenged being able to walk etc. In addition to making millions out of people’s misery, these people often wielded powerful political clouts which gave them elite status. Most often, the people who were followers of these gurus were poles apart. They were either the super rich or the very poor. But this trend took a change during the mid 90s. With the advent of globalisation, not only did the society in general begin to evolve, so did the gurus. With a burgeoning middle class, the swamis adopted new techniques to tap this new market.

Though globalisation has been a bane for many, it has also been a boon for some. With more and more multinationals setting shop in various metros, the young and educated middle class benefited the most from the job opportunities created by these new ventures. Though their new careers helped them procure the material comforts which they have always dreamt of, the stressful work life left them burnt out with little time or energy to enjoy those riches. Instead of introspecting into the reasons and system which has led to such a situation, more of these ‘educated and knowledgeable’ people went in search of gurus who will be able to rid them of all these worries. The gurus capitalised on this need and came up with different fancy ideas to make money. Programs such as ‘The Art of Living’ by Ravishankar, ‘LifeBliss Foundation’ by Nithyananda, “Transcendental Meditation movement” by Mahesh Yogi claim to show us how to lead a better life through Yoga and meditation.

A closer look at all these programs and discourses will show all that these gurus preach are basic facts of life known by everyone. But each one claims that their program is the only means by which one can achieve happiness and peace. And these programs do not come cheap. They are specifically designed for the corporate world and cost thousands of dollars. Naturally, the participants feel rejuvenated at the end of the program. If someone is housed in a serene environment with all facilities for a few days and does nothing but relax and enjoy clean and fresh air, they are bound to feel good. There is nothing spiritual or magical about it. But this temporary escape will vanish when reality returns. When these gurus get exposed, it obviously aggravates the followers because all these days they were being fed with crap that ‘worldly pleasures’ are bad and one needs to rid themselves of such ‘pleasures’ in order to achieve ‘true happiness’. When they see the same guy who said such things indulging in those ‘pleasures’, they feel cheated. Their misery is analogous to that of people who lose money by investing heavily in chit funds. They are not angry that they have been foolish enough to let themselves be cheated by someone who only told them those things that they wanted to hear; they are just angry that they didn’t choose the ‘right’ guru.

Even when these swamis get defamed, no doubt some people will still continue to stand by them. Others will continue their quest to find a ‘more effective’ guru. Its almost as if they need one guru or the other to tell them how to lead their lives. Unless they realize that the real reason for their miseries is the capitalist fueled economies and that these gurus are actually encouraged and supported by the very same biggies who exploit them, there will be no reprieve from this syndrome. Today, it is Nithyananda. Tomorrow, it’ll be someone else.

The subject of discussion this time around was people who had inter-caste/ inter-religious ‘love’ marriages. The moderator discussed various aspects starting from how the people found their spouses’ caste to how they faced their parents’ ire when they married and most crucially, the belief system under which they bring up their children. The opinions voiced by the audience make us wonder if the whole concept of inter-caste marriages has had any impact at all on curbing the impact of caste on the society.

Today, many people are of the opinion that caste is not as prevalent in towns and cities as in villages. With people moving to new places in search of greener pastures, it is widely believed that the different castes have truly amalgamated in the hustle and bustle of the city’s busy lifestyle. Nothing can be more far from the truth. In comparison to the open practising methods followed in villages, the folks in towns and cities adopt a more contemporary approach in establishing their hegemony. Theirs is an approach of making selective compromises that would make their life easier in a big city but not any that would affect their caste pride. In this way, they create an impression of having amicable relationship with others in the community but also retain the respect of their caste brethren. This is probably more sinister than the practices adopted in villages as the hatred is concealed in the guise of co-existence.

One of the main occasions when this caste pride comes to the fore is during marriages. All hell breaks loose when a boy or girl chooses to marry someone from a different caste. But nowadays, it seems like the people who get into these kinds of inter-caste relationships themselves know where to draw the line. This was quite evident from the opinions of the audience in the program. Just to give a glimpse, there was this woman who wanted her lover to either to be from the BC or the MBC category. Then there was this lady who went through her future partner’s certificates to figure out which caste he belonged to. Another woman told of how she knew of her partner’s caste even during her schooldays and the time when her parents threatened to kill him on knowing that he was from a different caste. This lady and many others apologised to their parents on the show for the grief the parents had been put through. The fact that those parents were prepared to kill another human being just to keep caste honour didn’t seem to bother these women. It was indeed sad to note that there wasn’t a single person who said they loathed the very system called caste and wanted to prove a point by marrying someone from a different community.

Another aspect which comes to our attention is how the offsprings of these relationships are brought up. In most inter-caste marriages, the lifestyle adopted by the couple will mostly adhere to the higher caste amongst those from which they hail from. This was also evident from the opinions voiced in the show. Examples such as the lady belonging to the Mudaliar caste giving her son a Brahmin upbringing (‘We have even performed the Poonool ceremony for him’, she said) and the Christian woman who converted to being a Hindu after marriage prove this point. Interestingly, it was mostly women who had made the compromises. It seems like the only instance where the couples make an exception is when they get a community certificate for their children!

Caste is definitely a social evil which needs to be exterminated. What’s required is a change in mindset of the society and awareness about the negative impact it has had on people’s lives. Marrying someone from another caste doesn’t serve any purpose unless there is a concrete effort to change one’s opinions about the evils of the system. Until this happens, these marriages would be no more than mere sham exercises which only serve to help programs like Neeya Naana garner more TRPs.

The mid 1970s. It was during this time that Rasaiyya aka Ilayaraja entered films. It was the period when listening to Hindi film songs was considered fashionable and tamil film music was looked down upon. The fate of tamil folk music was even more worse. It was virtually non existent in tamil movies. Only Carnatic music was considered to be ‘quality’ music. Ilayaraja would forever change this trend. His style rediscovered tamil folk music and experimented with nuances of music which were totally unheard of till then. The purists who initially dismissed his music as worthless had to eat their own words. Today, his music has reached a stage where his contemporaries pale in comparison.

Raja has always had an interesting relationship with the ‘elite’ of the tamil society. His eagerness to be in their good books is a known secret to anyone that has followed him over the years. In this light, the recent conferring of the ‘Isai Gnana Mani’ award on him by the Kanchi Kamakoti Peetam gains interest. The award was given away by the Jayandera Saraswati who is currently on bail for murder charges. It was apparently in recognition of Raja’s Thiruvasagam and his services to tamil music. During his acceptance speech, Raja revealed that he was asked by Chandrasekaran (Jayandera’s predecessor, now deceased) to work on the Thiruvasagam album. This is an interesting comment considering the fact that the gurus of the Kanchi mutt have never considered tamil to be a ‘pure’ language. They have gone to the extent of branding it as ‘neesa baashai’ (the language of the shudras). Also, the Kanchi Mutt follows the Vaishanavite approach of the Hindu religion and doesn’t approve the Saivite way to which Thiruvasagam belongs. All this is relatively unimportant. Our main point of concern is why would a genius like Raja stoop so low time and again.

Ilayaraja was born as Gnanadesikan (but known as Rasaiyya) in a Dalit Christian family. During his early years he was exposed to communist ideals by his elder brother ‘Paavalar’ Varadarajan who was involved with the Communist party. As a budding music composer, he assisted his brother during propaganda tours where music was used as a mode of protest. But once he started making attempts to enter the film music industry all this started to change gradually. Raja found it pretty hard to make an impression in an industry which was dominated by influences of Carnatic music. The purists refused to accept his style of music, branding him as ‘thavil party’. Needless to say, the fact that he came from a lower class background also added to this dismissal. Steadily Raja did begin to make progress and was accepted by the general public. But in order to be accepted by the so called custodians of music, he was rather compelled to change his personality. The mid 80s to early 90s saw the gradual shift of Raja towards the ideals of Hindutva. You can see this change in a lot of songs he composed during that period. A notable example is the ‘Janani Janani’ song among others. His personality also took a sharp change with the constant shaved head and beads around his neck and what not. He started doing concerts to collect funds to donate to the temple at Srirangam. It is a pity that he failed to notice that his fellowmen were still struggling to enter the very same temple! This change in attitude of his has been written about by many. A excerpt from an article about him in the Outlook magazine:

‘…despite his achievements, Ilayaraja is uncomfortable with the truth of his origins. When K.A. Gunasekaran wrote Isaimozhiyum Ilayarajavum (The Language of Music and Ilayaraja) in 2002, the composer was offended by the fact that Gunasekaran had discussed his Dalit origins. Ilayaraja sued the publisher and author for defamation. He has tried ceaselessly to merge himself into all that Hinduism holds in high regard. He is an ardent devotee of Ramanan of Thiruvannamalai and also planned to start a music research centre with the aid of the Kanchi Mutt’

It is a widely known fact that inspite of his generous donation to the temple at Tiruvannamalai, he was barred entry into the temple’s sanctum sanctorum during the religious ceremony held there.

As a composer, Raja has undeniably revolutionised music. But as an individual, he has completely failed in many respects. Why he tries to ape a group which has for centuries subjugated his own fellow beings is a mystery only he can answer. He may be excused for doing so during his initial days, but to do it till this day just baffles our understanding. Is this a case of sheer opportunism gone too far?

News is abuzz in the mainstream media for the past few days regarding the Maoist ‘violence’ in certain parts of the country. Normally these places would never even get a mention in the mainstream media and some are even astounded to know that there is some kind of instability in their own country which they thought to be very peaceful and prosperous. ‘Mindless violence’ is the name of the game in the media and by the politicians regarding this unrest or rebellion. The root causes of the hostility have been conveniently forgotten and the one and only focus is the ‘violence’ that is being perpetrated at the moment. To add fuel to the fire, the recent killing of a police officer has created a furore in the Indian media (Rahul Gandhi also empathized that his father was also killed for no ‘apparent’ reason). Not to be left behind, the self professed guardian angel of India Mr. Chidambaram has urged the Naxals to cease violence and join the democratic process and he is even perplexed as to why the Naxals would even resort to this kind of mindless violence. The public is given the notion that the very integrity and existence of India is at stake and this poses a grave hazard to the economic development of this nation which has seen consistent ‘growth’ in the past decade. The Naxal uprising is not something which has started recently as the government potrays it be. To understand the nature of the problem and the reasons behind why the government is crying foul now,one has to understand the origin or the evolution of the problem.

In 1967, a village named Naxalbari in West Bengal gave rise to a Left-Wing insurrection against the local landlords and the government who always sided with the landlords. Since then it has spread to various parts of the country and has grown to such an extent that the Indian state feels that its authority is being undermined. According to the government, the Naxals or Maoists have a strong presence in the states of Andhra Pradesh, Orrisa, Chattisgarh, Jharkand, West Bengal, Bihar and a considerable presence in the states of Maharastra, Madhya Pradesh and Uttar Pradesh. The regions which have seen a sharp in Naxalism are among the most impoverished or rather regions which have hardly seen any kind of economic activity in the past sixty years. The people living in these regions are predominantly adivasis (indigenous) who for centuries have lived in these areas and have maintained a sustainable ecosystem until now. The government began encroaching tribal lands for the purpose of logging and when the private operators stepped in, the total ecosystem took a beating. The adivasis, whose lives depended on these forests were totally thrown out of gear. These people with very modest means resisted through peaceful means but the state machinery brutally clamped it down. The government spared no means to see that the resistance is nipped off without a trace. When all forms of peaceful resistance proved futile the adivasis had to resort to an alternate form of resistance and that’s when they looked up to the ideology of Mao Zedong who himself waged a guerrilla warfare against class oppression. The Naxals or Maoists began organizing themselves and slowly armed themselves together with assimilating all splinter groups. The Naxals that we see today are not only armed but have found immense support among the local people which is the prime reason why they can hold off the might of the state machinery.

The ulterior motive of the government is to get rid off these people to acquire these lands so they can sell it to steel and aluminum companies. Vast amounts of ore deposits have been found in these areas and since then the corporate thieves have been lobbying the Indian government to turn over the land to them. The government’s commitment to safeguard the interests of the Tatas, Jindals, Mittals and other scoundrels are far more important than the lives and livelihoods of millions of people. The mainstream media on its part is trying to project this issue as an obstacle to development as they are part of the coterie. Suddenly the government wants the Naxals to abjure ‘violence’ but do not give any assurance on their part as to what they would do to address the issue which gave rise to this ‘violence’ in the first place. The other ludicrous thing is that,Chidambaram and his hideous acolytes want the Naxals to join the electoral process. Chidambaram who himself won the recent elections fraudulently gives this sham called elections a clean chit. These hoodlums do not want or would not want to understand that the Naxals don’t even accept this system in place and want to change it for good. There lies the evil design of the government which does not even want to accept the nature of the problem. If the government of India goes ahead with its military strategy then it would be nothing short of genocide of innocent people.

Buoyed by the recent success in Sri Lanka where thousands were slaughtered mercilessly with the tacit approval of the International Community, the government of India is planning to spare no means to quell this resistance. LPG, the acronym for the rather acrimonious Liberalization, Privatization and Globalization is once again unleashing its evil claws under the pretext of growth but hidden behind this grand façade is a sinister motive to exploit and expunge anything in its path. A kind of colonial invasion has been going on in this country since the last decade which was rather covert but now they have become blatant. The government machinery has become its tools and the patriotic citizens are the stooges who empower the government. It is in the hands of the government and the patriotic citizens who believe in the current system to stop this ‘violence’.They are the real perpetrators and should they choose to pass the buck, then this ‘violence’ can never be put to rest and it would surely spread to each and every part of the country even spilling on into the comfort couches of our living rooms.

“அம்மா தாயே அதெல்லாம் எதுவும் செஞ்சுடாதே; ஊருல இருக்கற மாமா, சித்தப்பா எல்லாரையும் கூப்பிட்டு ஒப்பாரி வைக்க ஆரம்பிச்சிடுவாங்க.
‘பெண் விடுதலை’ பத்தி பேசினா…என்னிக்கு வெளியாகுது, யாரு நடிச்சிருக்காங்கன்னு கேக்கறாங்க.
இந்த society என்னிக்கு ஒரு பொண்ணும் தண்ணி அடிக்கலாம், பசங்கள மாதிரி துணி போடலாம், வேலைக்கு போறது, கார் ஓட்டறது எதுவானாலும் ஒரு ஆணுக்கு குறைஞ்சவ இல்லேன்னு உணருதோ… அன்னிக்கித்தான் பெண் விடுதலை சாத்தியமாகும்”, என உணர்ச்சி ததும்ப தன் ‘பரிதாப நிலை’யை விளக்கினாள் சுமித்ரா.
“நீ இப்படியே பேசு…ஒரு நாள் பாருங்கடி…இவ ‘மகளிர் முன்னேற்ற கழகம்’ ஒன்னு ஆரம்பிச்சு ‘பீர் பாட்டில்’ சின்னத்துக்கு வாக்களிக்க சொல்ல போறா”, என கேலி செய்தாள் கலா.

“உன் கட்சி வெற்றி பெற எங்கள் நல் வாழ்த்துக்கள்; எனக்கு பசி உயிர் போகுது; யார் வரீங்க canteen க்கு”, என கலா கூற…கலைந்தது பொதுக்கூட்டம்.

6 வருடங்களுக்கு பிறகு
“எவ்வளவு ஆச்சு”, என credit card ஐ நீட்டினாள் சுமித்ரா.
“நீங்க…சுமித்ரா தானே…கே.எம். கல்லூரில படிச்சீங்களா”, என யாரோ பின்னால் இருந்து வினவ, திரும்பினாள் சுமித்ரா.
“ஆமாம் நீங்கே…ஏய் கலா எப்படி இருக்கே. நீ எங்க இங்க. பெங்களூர்லே செட்டில் ஆயிட்டன்னு கேள்விப்பட்டேன்”, என பேச ஆள் கிடைத்த மகிழ்ச்சியை சரமாரியான கேள்விகளால் வெளிப்படுத்தினாள் சுமித்ரா.
“என் கணவருக்கு இடமாத்தம் ஆயிடுச்சு. அதுதான்; இங்க பெசன்ட் நகர்ல தான் இருக்கேன்”, என்றாள் கலா.
தோழிகளின் திருமணங்கள், குழந்தைகள், விவாகரத்துகள் அனைத்தையும் பேசி முடிப்பதற்குள் கடை மூடும் நேரமானது.
“வீட்டுக்கு வர…காபி சாபிட்டுக்கிட்டே பேசறோம்”, என அன்பு கட்டளையிட்டாள் சுமித்ரா.
“நீ மாறவே இல்லே டி…ஆனா ரொம்ப நேரம் இருக்க முடியாது”, என கலா கூற, இருவரும் வெளியில் நின்றிருந்த சுமித்ராவின் toyota car ஐ நோக்கி நடந்தனர்.
“காபி பிரமாதம் சுமி… உன் கணவர் எப்ப வருவாரு…ஒரு வணக்கம் போட்டுட்டு போகலாம்னா…”, என கலா கூறி முடிப்பதற்குள்,
“ஏன்டீ சுமி…எவ்வளவு தடவை இந்த ‘door mat’ அ தூசி தட்ட சொல்றேன்..ஒன்னு சொன்னா உடனே செய்ய உடம்பு வணங்கினாத்தானே. இன்னிக்கி திரும்பவும் தோசை வரட்டி மாதிரி இருந்தது..குழம்புல உப்பே சுத்தமா இல்ல. உன்ன என் தலைல கட்டின அந்த நடராசன சொல்லணும்”, என தன் வருகையையை அறிவித்தான் சேகர்.
“ஏய் சுமி…என்ன பதிலே..”, என பேசிக்கொண்டே வந்த சேகர், கலாவை பார்த்த உடன் அசடு வழிந்தான்; செய்கையினால் ஒரு hello சொன்னான்.
“இந்த சனி-ஞாயிறு பண்ணலாம்னு இருந்தேங்க”, என சேகருக்கு பதில் அளித்துவிட்டு, “கொஞ்ச நேரம் இரு கலா…வீட்ல பண்ணினேன்…சாப்பிட்டு பாரு”, என தோழியை கேசரியுடன் உபசரித்தாள் சுமித்ரா.
“கேக்கறேன்னு தப்பா நினைக்காதே, உன் கணவர் வீட்டு வேலைல help பண்ண மாட்டாரா”, என கலா கேட்டாள்.
“அத ஏன் கேக்கற…நிறைய தடவை சொல்லி பாத்துட்டேன்; office க்கு போயிட்டு வந்து, குழந்தை படிப்ப கவனிச்சு, வீட்டு வேலைய செஞ்சு முடிக்கறதுக்குள்ள… பதினொன்னு-பன்னிரண்டு மணி ஆயிடுது. கொஞ்சம் கோபமா பேசினா…divorce வாங்கிக்கோ, அம்மா வீட்டுக்கு போயிடுனு சொல்றாரு. என்ன பண்ண…வீட்டுக்கு வீடு வாசப்படினு adjust பண்ண வேண்டியதுதான்; infact வேலைய கூட விட்டுடலாமானு பாக்கறேன்”, என அலுத்துக்கொண்டாள் சுமித்ரா.
“பெண் விடுதலை பத்தி…” என ஆரம்பிக்க நினைத்து “நமக்கேன் வம்பு”, என்று அமைதியாய் கேசரியில் முந்திரி வேட்டையை தொடர்ந்தாள் கலா.

“பெண்ணுக்கு உரிமை என்பது தனிநபர் உரிமையாக சுருக்கிப் பார்த்தால், பஃப்புக்கு செல்வது, மானாட மயிலாட அல்லது ஜோடி ஒன்று நிகழ்ச்சியில் பங்கேற்பது, பார்வையாளராகச் செல்வது, தனியாக ஸ்கூட்டரிலோ, காரிலோ ஓட்டிச் செல்வது, வேலைகளில் ஏற்றத்தாழ்வின்றி எல்லா வகை வேலைகளுக்கும் செல்வது… இப்படித்தான் பலரும் புரிந்து கொள்கின்றனர். ஆனால் இத்தகைய தனிநபர் உரிமைகளைப் பெற்றுள்ள பெண்கள் தமது மணவாழ்க்கையைச் சுயேச்சையாக முடிவெடுக்க முடியாது. அப்படி மீறி எடுத்தால் கொலைவெறியைச் சந்திக்க வேண்டும் எனும் போது இங்கே எது பெண்ணுரிமை? ஏது பெண்ணுரிமை?”
